Twelve avid cyclists had the fantastic opportunity to take part in a cycle race on a purpose built ‘Street Velodrome.’ The pop-up event turned the Lagan Valley LeisurePlex into a heart-pounding theatre of cycling action!
Wallace pupils from Years 8 to 11 received training from professional cyclists on how to approach the high berms of the velodrome track before having the chance to race the circuit against an opponent. Indeed, the Street Velodrome track brings all the excitement and drama of Olympic style track pursuit racing! The event was organised by Lisburn Castlereagh Council in collaboration with professional cycling support with all equipment, from protection clothing through to the competition bikes, also being provided.
Participator Josh commented, “I didn’t think the banks would be as high…it was a great opportunity to race on the track!”
Senior Teacher (and keen cyclist!) Mr J Reid commented, “The Lisburn Street Velodrome event was a great taster session for Wallace pupils and I am sure it will attract interest to the brilliant sport of cycling! I would like to thank the Lisburn and Castlereagh Council for this enjoyable opportunity.”
